Corky Daylily, Daylily
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
The Corky daylily's flowers look bright lemon yellow, but close inspection reveals a color called pinard yellow - yellow with faint undertones of pale green hues. Flower buds are reddish-brown. They appear anytime from late mid-spring to early summer, depending on climate. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. 'Corky' was bred by H.A. Fischer and introduced in 1959.
This hybrid produces flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that die back in fall and winter's cold. Six yellow, petal-like tepals comprise the flower that has a green throat. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning but withers well before it reaches 24-hours old. The reverse side of the flower reveals bronze smears.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
