With minutely ruffled petal edges, 'Decatur Piecrust' flowers are palest pink to light peach or salmon-pink. It blooms, depending on climate, starting in late mid-spring to very early summer. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. The hybrid tetraploid ‘Decatur Piecrust' was introduced in 1982.
This daylily produces its crepe paper-like flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. The flowers are variably pale pink or peachy pink with small salmon-colored throats. The petal-like tepals have rippled edges, arguably the most ornamental feature of this daylily's flowers. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that die back each winter. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning, remains open at least 16 hours but shrivels up before reaching 24-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
