Long-lasting, fragrant flowers appear on the Frosted Pink Ice daylily anytime from mid-spring to very early summer, depending on climate. The blossoms are mostly pink, but with a faint lavender-blue cast. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. The hybrid diploid ‘Frosted Pink Ice' was bred by Patrick Stamile and introduced in 1987.
This daylily produces 5-inch-wide (12 cm) flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. Six pink petal-like tepals comprise each flower that has a yellow to green throat. Tepal edges are rippled and a faint ivory-pink midrib may be seen on three tepals. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that die back each winter. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning, stays open for at least 16 hours but closes and shrivels before reaching 24-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
