Towering stems topped with 6-inch-wide (15 cm) yellow flowers are highlights of the One Above You daylily. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. In early to midsummer, the hybrid tetraploid ‘One Above You’ produces extremely fragrant flowers atop a head-high (or above), naked branching stem called a scape. The six long, petal-like tepals are bright yellow are are unusual in form since the tepals look pinched and gently floppy or curled. These flowers open in the morning. They arise from clumps of strappy green leaves that fully die back by winter. Each blossom in the bud cluster closes and shrivels up by the time they're 24-hours old. 'One Above You' was bred by James Gossard and introduced in 2009. Healthy plants will rebloom several weeks later.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
