Daylily, Petite Daylily

The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. Introduced in 1954 and bred by W. Davis, the Petite daylily is a hybrid diploid that produces light red (but looks pale orange-red) flowers with a yellow throat. They appear anytime from mid-spring to very early summer, depending on climate, and a plant reblooms a couple months later.
The Petite daylily displays its flowers on branching naked stems called scapes. The scapes rise jsut above the clump of strappy green leaves that are evergreen across winter, especially in mild climates. Six narrow but pointed petal-like tepals comprise this daylily's star-like flower. Each blossom in the scape's bud cluster opens in the morning but shrivels up well before reaching 24-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
