Grapefruit-size flowers that are predominantly reddish purple-violet to burgundy appear on the Purple Termite daylily. This cultivar blooms in mid-spring to very early summer, depending on climate. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. The hybrid diploid 'Purple Termite' was bred by James Gossard and introduced in 2005.
This daylily produces its fragrant flowers atop a tall, branching naked stem called a scape. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that die back each winter. Each petal-like tepal is purple-red and has tiny-ripple edges that are white. The flower's throat is contrasting chartreuse-yellow. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning but shrivels up once about 12-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
