HEMEROCALLIS 'Renee'
Daylily, Renee Daylily
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
The light yellow Renee daylily flowers have a crepe paper texture and emit a light fragrance. This cultivar blooms in late mid-spring to very early summer, depending on climate. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. The hybrid diploid 'Renee' was introduced in 1962.
This daylily produces its flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. The scapes rise from clumps of strap-like green leaves that die back in winter. Each petal-like tepal is light yellow and wavy edged while the flower's throat is green. Three tepals often reflex to make the flower face look triangular rather than perfectly circular. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning, but shrivels up before reaching 16-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
