The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. Introduced in 1947, the Russell's Minuet daylily is a hybrid that produces orange-red and yellow flowers that occur anytime from late mid-spring to late midsummer, depending on climate.
The hybrid 'Russell's Minuet' displays its flowers on tall, branching naked stems called scapes. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that die away every winter. Six petal-like tepals comprise a daylily's flower. Three are greenish light yellow and three are medium red-orange. The throat is yellow to green. Each blossom in the scape's bud cluster opens in the morning but shrivels up once it's between 16- to 24-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
