Two-colored, baseball-size flowers appear on the Sparkling Eyes daylily, and they remain open overnight. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. In very early summer, the hybrid diploid ‘Sparkling Eyes' produces flowers atop a naked stem called a scape. The six petal-like tepals have wavy edges and are a creamy light yellow. A sienna-red crescent appears near the lower middle of each tepal, creating an eye above the yellow-green throat. The flower's broad throat becomes yellowish gold. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that remain evergreen over the winter. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the afternoon - stays open overnight - but shrivels up before it's 24-hours old the following midday. 'Sparkling Eyes' was bred by Mildred Love and introduced in 1994.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
