Ruffled mauve-pink flowers makes the Stephanie Returns daylily one of the prettiest available. This cultivar blooms in mid- to late spring to very early summer, depending on climate, and will rebloom several weeks later. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. The hybrid diploid 'Stephanie Returns' was introduced in 2006.
This daylily produces just over 4-inch-wide (11 cm) flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that die back in winter. The predominantly mauve-pink, petal-like tepals are ornately edged in wavy ruffles and have dark rose-tinted midribs. The flower's throat blushes yellowish green and a thin dark rose "eye" occurs just above it. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning and then shrivels up well before reaching 16-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
