Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

Heuchera 'Obsidian' PP14836

Plant Common Name

Alumroot, Obsidian Alumroot

General Description

‘Obsidian’ offers some of the darkest foliage to be found in the wide world of Heuchera hybrids. Its glossy, lobed leaves are deepest burgundy-black, contrasting dramatically with brighter colors in the garden. In late spring to early summer, airy panicles of tiny, white flowers appear on wiry stems atop the midnight-hued foliage of this award-winning perennial.

Heuchera is happiest when grown in partial sun or bright filtered shade similar to that of a naturally open forest. In the South it requires protection from direct afternoon sun. Well-drained, neutral, organic-rich soil with average moisture is needed for best growth and performance. This striking Heuchera is a stylish choice for container compositions, mixed borders or woodland gardens and makes a fine edging plant or groundcover.

The diverse genus Heuchera comprises approximately 50 species and hundreds of hybrid cultivars. These hardy perennials are endemic to North America and are most commonly grown for their attractive basal clumps of evergreen, semi-evergreen or herbaceous foliage that comes in a variety of solid or variegated colors.
