Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

HEUCHERA sanguinea 'Splendens'

Plant Common Name

Coralbells

General Description

Heuchera sanguinea ‘Splendens’ is an old-fashioned, green-leaved coralbells cultivar which is valued for its airy panicles of brilliant, bell-shaped flowers. Its delicate stems arise from compact mounds of subtle, toothed, green foliage, and bear many small, scarlet-red blooms which appear from late spring to early summer. The blossoms are attractive to bees and hummingbirds, and make excellent, long-lived cut flowers.

Although tolerant of a variety of conditions including moderately dry shade, Heuchera sanguinea ‘Splendens’ prefers reasonably moist, fertile, well-drained soil and a site receiving partial sun to partial shade. Plant this Heuchera in groups at the front of the border where its colorful blooms can be admired up close.

Heuchera is a diverse genus that comprises approximately 50 species and hundreds of hybrid cultivars. These hardy perennials are endemic to North America and are most commonly grown for their attractive basal clumps of evergreen, semi-evergreen or herbaceous foliage that comes in a variety of solid or variegated colors. Some species, such as Heuchera sanguinea, are noted for their attractive flowers as well.
