General Description

African Rosemallow is a fast-growing, shrubby annual or short-lived, woody- based perennial grown mainly for its red-flushed leaves, which are often compared to the decorative leaves of Japanese maples. The leaves of this hibiscus are held facing outwards on long stalks and they form a cascading round canopy. Some gardeners use the leaves in salads and stir fries for their tartness. The flowers are funnel-shaped and yellow or purplish-pink. They bloom from late summer to fall. This hibiscus species is a warm climate ornamental, native to central and eastern Africa. There are selections of the species with notable leaf colors, such as the iridescent bronze of ‘Coppertone.’

For best growth and flowering, give this hibiscus a site with full sun and well-drained soil, either in the ground or in a large container. Use African rosemallow as a foliage accent to backdrop plants with silver or chartreuse leaves and shorter perennials, such as dwarf daylilies, with light-colored flowers.
