HIBISCUS 'Crown Jewels'

Image of Hibiscus 'Crown Jewels' PP11857

Family

Malvaceae

Botanical Name

HIBISCUS 'Crown Jewels' PP11857

Plant Common Name

Crown Jewels Hibiscus, Hybrid Hardy Hibiscus

General Description

Compact, small and extremely hardy, 'Crown Jewels' is an excellent hibiscus that is the result of extensive hybridization. This semi-woody perennial has purple-violet, deeply three-lobed leaves similar in shape to those of a maple tree. This is a long-blooming plant that flowers from midsummer to frost, longer if in a subtropical garden. The exceptional flowers are white and medium-sized. The center of each bloom is red and the red veins invade the thick, ruffled white petals, giving the visual illusion of a shading to pink. Individual flowers last one to two days, and several dozen can be open at a time. Frost ends bloom and causes leaf drop, while hard freezes kill the plant to the ground, ready to sprout the following spring once the soil warms.

This cultivar needs full to partial sun and rich to average soil for best growth and flowering. It is exceptionally cold hardy, tolerant of heat, moist soil and resistant to most insect pests. Like many herbaceous hibiscuses, it is a warm-season plant that is slow to emerge in spring, so it is important to warm the soil around it by pulling back any mulch at its crown. Use 'Crown Jewels’ as part of intimate, sunny mixed borders, in a container, or as an informal edging.
