General Description

The Cranberry Punch® hardy hibiscus, ‘Whit XX,' is a dwarf, shrubby, herbaceous perennial with upright, stiff stems, a partly woody base, and showy flowers. A selection of a species native to the eastern U.S., it blooms with dark-red flowers the size of salad plates that last for two to three days and are replaced continuously from mid summer to frost by new flowers from multiple clusters of buds. The plant is upright yet also broadly spreading and the flowers tend to face outward, with several fully open at a time.

Plant ‘Whit XX’ in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Avoid highly alkaline and dry soils. It is slow to awaken and sprout new stems in spring, waiting for warm soil and warm days, but then grows quickly. In autumn, cut down the dead stalks after frost. In mild winter regions, the plants can be pruned back hard or repetitively pinched back for new growth and more flowers. Use ‘Whit XX’at the back of a perennial bed or border, at the foot of a wall or fence, or as an accent plant. It also thrives in low and wet spots, and beside streams and ponds.
