General Description

The tropical hibiscus 'Dark Continent' challenges your idea of what a flower's color should be. Its ruffled petals are a mottled blend of creamy yellow with light bronze-gray. They are a rich deep red at their bases, forming a large central eye.Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is an evergreen shrub that originates from China, and 'Cherie' is a hybrid derived from two cultivated varieties. This tropical hibiscus is slower growing and blooms only when temperatures are warm.

The broad semi-glossy leaves of 'Dark Continent' are deep green and oval-shaped. Its flowers are large, radial and broad. In the dark red center of each is a short, stubby, dark red floral column lined with a bottlebrush of bright yellow anthers and stigmas, increasing the floral beauty tremendously.

Tropical hibiscus is heat tolerant, excelling in full to partial sun and acidic to neutral, fertile soil with good drainage. Very poor and alkaline soils lead to nutrient deficiencies. Remove spent flowers' developing green seed capsules to promote continual production of new blossoms. Tropical hibiscus is a garden staple in both tropical and temperate landscapes. This unique, modest-growing cultivar can be grown in sunny mixed borders or in large containers that can be moved indoors to overwinter if needed. The short floral stem can be cut and placed in water to enjoy the open flower for one day.
