HIBISCUS rosa-sinensis 'Doctor Jack Burge'

Image of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Doctor Jack Burge'

Family

Malvaceae

Botanical Name

HIBISCUS rosa-sinensis 'Doctor Jack Burge'

Plant Common Name

Doctor Jack Burge Tropical Hibiscus, Queen-of-the-tropics., Tropical Hibiscus

General Description

The tropical hibiscus 'Doctor Jack Burge' conservatively develops its rich red, poodle-like flowers. The outer ring of petals are flat and smooth, whereas a central cluster of ruffled petals hides the floral column. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is an evergreen shrub that originates from China, and 'Doctor Jack Burge' is a hybrid derived from two cultivated varieties. This tropical hibiscus is vigorous but blooms only sporadically when weather is warm.

The broad, semi-glossy leaves of 'Doctor Jack Burge' are deep green and oval-shaped. Its flowers are only occasionally produced, being medium sized (although small in hibiscus standards), semi-double with both flat and wavy petals. In the hidden center of each blossom is a long red floral column lined with a bottlebrush of bright yellow anthers and stigmas, adding more floral delight.

Tropical hibiscus is heat tolerant, excelling in full to partial sun and acidic to neutral, fertile soil with good drainage. Very poor and alkaline soils lead to nutrient deficiencies. Remove spent flowers' developing green seed capsules to hasten production of new blossoms. Tropical hibiscus is a garden staple in both tropical and temperate landscapes. This vigorous, upright cultivar can be grown in mixed borders or as a hedge or screen. The short floral stem can be cut and placed in water to enjoy the open flower for one day.
