Family

Malvaceae

Botanical Name

HIBISCUS rosa-sinensis 'El Capitolio'

Plant Common Name

El Capitolio Tropical Hibiscus, Queen-of-the-tropics., Tropical Hibiscus

General Description

The tropical poodle hibiscus 'El Capitolio' produces robust red flowers with a floral column capped in more ruffled petals. The five, star-like petals are red, with occasional white blotches and jagged edges and may twist and contort. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is an evergreen shrub that originates from China, and 'El Capitolio' is a hybrid derived from two cultivated varieties. This tropical hibiscus is vigorous and blooms well over an extended period of time.

The broad semi-glossy leaves of the poodle hibiscus are deep green and oval-shaped. Its flowers are large and held outwards or weeping. In the center of each flower is a long red floral column that is tipped by a ruffled mass of red petals (called a crest), within which the anthers and stigmas rest.

Tropical hibiscus is heat tolerant, excelling in full to partial sun and acidic to neutral, fertile soil with good drainage. Very poor and alkaline soils lead to nutrient deficiencies. Remove spent flowers' developing green seed capsules to promote continual production of new blossoms. Tropical hibiscus is a garden staple in both tropical and temperate landscapes. This vibrant, very large, sprawling cultivar can be grown in sunny borders, in spacious foundation beds, as informal hedges or in large containers that can be moved indoors to overwinter if needed. The long, flimsy floral stem can be cut and placed in water to enjoy the open flower for one day.
