The tropical hibiscus 'Jamilou' shines with its large multi-colored plum, light yellow and red-pink blossoms. Each rounded petal overlaps the next and holds up its inner ruffled edge. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is an evergreen shrub that originates from China, and 'Jamilou' is a hybrid derived from two cultivated varieties. This tropical hibiscus is bushy and vigorous and blooms well over an extended period of time.
The large, smooth-edged, glossy leaves of 'Jamilou' are medium green and plumply oval-shaped. Its flowers are large, radial and broad. In the dark plum-purple center of each is a short plum floral column lined with a bottlebrush of light yellow anthers and orange stigmas.
Tropical hibiscus is heat tolerant, and 'Jamilou' excels in full sun to medium shade and acidic to neutral, fertile soil with good drainage. Very poor and highly alkaline soils lead to nutrient deficiencies. Remove spent flowers' developing green seed capsules to promote continual production of new blossoms. Tropical hibiscus is a garden staple in both tropical and temperate landscapes. This vibrant cultivar can be grown in sunny to partially shaded mixed borders, in spacious foundation beds,as an informal hedge or in large containers that can be moved indoors to overwinter if needed. The short floral stem can be cut and placed in water to enjoy the open flower for one day.
