HIBISCUS rosa-sinensis 'Santana'

Image of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Santana'

Family

Malvaceae

Botanical Name

HIBISCUS rosa-sinensis 'Santana'

Plant Common Name

Queen-of-the-tropics., Santana Tropical Hibiscus, Tropical Hibiscus

General Description

The tropical hibiscus 'Santana' displays a glorious, romantic and regal blossom of red, coral-peach and yellow with a dark red eye. Each petal is round, perfectly ruffled, overlapping and is pale yellow at the edge, becoming pink or coral-peach in the middle under a fan of yellow veins, and then red and dark red at the base. The yellow ruffles are held upwards on overlapping petal edges and are superbly contrasted by the red of the neighboring petal. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is an evergreen shrub that originates from China, and 'Santana' is a hybrid derived from two cultivated varieties. This tropical hibiscus is tall and upright and blooms well over an extended period of time.

The numerous glossy leaves of 'Santana' are dark green and broadly heart-shaped. The flowers are immense (considered extra-large by hibiscus standards), radial and broad. In the dark red center there is a short floral column that gradates from red to peach to yellow under the bottlebrush of golden yellow stamens and coral-peach stigmas.

Tropical hibiscus is heat tolerant, excelling in full to partial sun and acidic to neutral, fertile soil with good drainage. Very poor and alkaline soils lead to nutrient deficiencies. Remove spent flowers' developing green seed capsules to promote continual production of new blossoms. Tropical hibiscus is a garden staple in both tropical and temperate landscapes. This vibrant, upright growing, well-branched cultivar can be grown as a specimen in sunny mixed borders or foundation beds, as an informal hedge or in large containers that can be moved indoors to overwinter if needed. The short floral stem can be cut and placed in water to enjoy the open flower for one day.
