Plant Common Name
Queen-of-the-tropics., Sylvia Goodman Tropical Hibiscus, Tropical Hibiscus
General Description
Sylvia Goodman hibiscus is a mini-flowering hibiscus that is known for its ability to grow in a wide range of places in the garden. Its blossoms are relatively small, but with cream colored petals that fade to wide at their bases around the dark red "star" in the center. Its floral tube is long. This evergreen shrub originates from southern China. Everblooming and vigorous, it has glossy green leaves and produces single, disc-shaped flowers. These have conical centers lined with a bottlebrush of yellow anthers and punctuated with five-parted spider-like stigmas, which add an additional flourish of floral drama.
Tropical hibiscus is heat tolerant and prefers mildly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil and full sun. A staple of both tropical and temperate landscapes, this vibrant ornamental can be grown in mixed borders, or large containers that can be moved indoors to overwinter.
