Family

Malvaceae

Botanical Name

HIBISCUS rosa-sinensis 'Scarlet Loke'( LUAU® SERIES) PP20414

Plant Common Name

Scarlet Loke Hibiscus, Tropical Hibiscus

General Description

Flaunting large fiery flowers at an early age, this compact bushy shrub is one of several cultivars in the Luau® Series of Hibiscus. All are selections of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, a tender evergreen shrub from southern China that is unknown in the wild but ubiquitous in tropical gardens and greenhouses.

This 2008 introduction bears toothed, oval, glossy dark-green leaves and enormous, disc-shaped flowers on dense, slightly spreading, knee- to waist-high plants. The scarlet-orange blooms have a central bottlebrush of yellow anthers surmounted by a red, five-parted, spider-like style. Bloom continues year-round in warm sites. Plants are propagated by cuttings and bloom within 18 weeks.

Luau® Series hibiscus are heat-tolerant, sun-loving shrubs that thrive in well-drained, humus-rich, circumneutral soil. They flower on new wood, and are best pruned in late winter or early spring. Pest and diseases are minimal. Well suited for frost-free borders or foundation plantings, these flamboyant shrubs are also delightful in containers.
