HOSTA 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd'
Abiqua Drinking Gourd Plantain Lily, Hosta, Plantain Lily
Hostas are mound-forming herbaceous perennials grown mostly for their attractive foliage. The substantial ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’ is a medium to large hosta that forms clumps. Its leaves are very round, thick and corrugated like cardboard. They are blue-green in color and deeply cupped. White flowers are tubular and appear on tall stems held above the foliage in late summer.
Overall, this hosta grows best in full to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soil types. Hostas have average water needs, but prefer even moisture. In hot and dry conditions most develop dry leaf edges and tips. Pests are also a problem. Slugs and snails favor Hosta leaves and riddle them with holes, and deer will feast on them if given the chance. Hosta are best used in shaded perennial gardens or can be massed as an herbaceous groundcover.
