Chionea Plantain Lily, Hosta, Plantain Lily
Herbaceous perennials, hostas are grown for their attractive leaves, mounding habit, toughness, and tolerance for shade. This one, the pretty variegated ‘Chionea,’ is small and tidy, forming a vase-shaped mound of narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green with evenly narrow silvery-white margins. An abundance of large purple-striped, bell-shaped flowers appear on leafy stems held high above the foliage in late summer.
Like other hostas ‘Chionea’ grows best in full to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of fertile well-drained soils. It has average water needs and prefers even moisture. In hot and dry conditions the leaf tips and edge may dry and wither.Use ‘Chionea’ to add contrasts of texture, sixe and pale color shaded perennial gardens and woodland, or planted en masse as an herbaceous groundcover.
