Crusader Plantain Lily, Hosta, Plantain Lily
Hostas are herbaceous perennials grown for their leaves, mounding habit, toughness and tolerance of shade. This one, ‘Crusader’ is a medium-sized variegated hosta that forms neat clumps. Its heart-shaped leaves have good substance and are puckered and ribbed. They are slightly blue-green in color accented with white to chartreuse, irregularly-shaped margins. Lavender funnel-shaped flowers appear on tall stems held above the foliage in late summer.
Like most hostas, ‘Crusader’ grows best in full to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soil. It has average water needs and prefers even moisture. Use ‘Crusader’ for its showy leaves, for contrasts of color and texture in shaded perennial gardens and woodlands, or can planted en masse as an herbaceous groundcover for a shady spot.
