Decorata Plantain Lily, Hosta, Plantain Lily
Hostas are herbaceous perennials grown for their attractive leaves, mounding habit, toughness, and tolerance for shade. This one, ‘Decorata’ is an antique, brought to the United States from Japan around 1875. It is a small to medium-sized hosta that spreads slowly via stolons (aboveground lateral stems) to form colonies. The leaves are elliptical to oval with blunt tips. They are lightly twisted, wavy and corrugated. The leaves are dark green and outline by a white margin. Purple, fertile bell-shaped flowers appear on leafless stems held above the foliage in midsummer.
Like most hostas, ‘Decorata’ grows best in full to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils. It has average water needs and prefers even moisture. Use ‘Decorata’ for its size, texture, and variegation in shaded perennial gardens and woodlands, or planted en masse as an herbaceous groundcover.
