HOSTA 'Elata'

Image of Hosta 'Elata'

Mark A. Miller

Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

HOSTA 'Elata'

Plant Common Name

Elata Plantain Lily, Hosta, Plantain Lily

General Description

Hostas are herbaceous perennials grown for their attractive leaves, mounding habit, toughness and tolerance of shade. Bold ‘Elata’ is a vigorous, very large hosta that forms impressive, outspread clumps. Its exceptionally large sea-green, oval leaves taper to a point and have deeply impressed ribbing. Lavender funnel to bell-shaped flowers appear in clusters on tall stems held above the foliage in midsummer.

Like most hostas ‘Elata’ grows best in full to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils. It has average water needs and prefers even moisture. Use ‘Elata’ for a vivid contrast of size, silhouette and texture in shaded perennial gardens and woodlands, as a feature beside a path, or planted en masse under a large tree.
