Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
Hosta, Plantain Lily
Hostas are herbaceous perennials grown for their attractive leaves, tolerance for shade, toughness, and mounding habit. One of many hosta species brought into gardening from their native regions in Asia, Hosta ensata from Korea makes a spreading mound of narrow, tapering, green leaves held upright and horizontally on long petioles (leaf stems). The flowers are lavender and borne in clusters of up to twenty on stalks that rise above the leaves in late summer.
Like most hostas, Hosta ensata grows best in partial shade to full shade, tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, and prefers average, even moisture. Use it for texture, habit, and profuse flowering in shaded perennial gardens and woodlands, or massed as a groundcover.
