Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

HOSTA 'Hadspen Blue'

Plant Common Name

Hadspen Blue Plantain Lily, Hosta, Plantain Lily

General Description

Hostas are mound-forming herbaceous perennials grown mostly for their attractive foliage. The dainty ‘Hadspen Blue’ is a small hosta that forms low growing, spreading clumps. Its moderately-sized, oval leaves are thick and have a very heavy texture. They are deep powder blue and hold the color throughout the growing season. Pale lavender bell-shaped flowers appear on tall stems with a few small leaves in summer.

Overall, this hosta grows best in full to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soil types. Hostas have average water needs, but prefer even moisture. In hot and dry conditions most develop dry leaf edges and tips. Pests are also a problem. Slugs and snails favor Hosta leaves and riddle them with holes, and deer will feast on them if given the chance. Hosta are best used in shaded perennial gardens or can be massed as an herbaceous groundcover.
