HOSTA longipes 'Aurea'
Aurea Plantain Lily, Hosta, Plantain Lily
Hostas are herbaceous perennials grown for their attractive leaves, tolerance for shade, toughness, and mounding habit. This one, Hosta longipes ‘Aurea,’ a sport (a mutation) of a species native to Asia, is prized for its red petioles (leaf stems) and the uniform, glowing color of its leaves, which emerge bright yellow in spring and turn chartreuse with time. The leaves are long, narrow, tapering and smooth. They grow in a fountain-like clump. The flowers are pale lavender and borne in clusters on stalks that rise above the leaves in late summer.
Like most hostas, Hosta longipesAurea’ grows best in partial shade to full shade, tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, and prefers average, even moisture. Use it for contrasts of color and habit in shaded perennial gardens and woodlands, or massed as a lively groundcover.
