HOSTA 'Sun Power'

Image of Hosta 'Sun Power'

Gerald L. Klingaman

Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

HOSTA 'Sun Power'

Plant Common Name

Hosta, Plantain Lily, Sun Power Plantain Lily

General Description

Hostas need shade, right? Not always. The gold-leaved ‘Sun Power’ and other hostas with yellow leaves, tend to need more light for brilliant leaf color. Hosta are clump-forming herbaceous ornamentals grown mostly for their attractive foliage. The bright gold leaves of ‘Sun Power’ are broadly oval with pointed, twisted tips. They are very sun tolerant and have prominent veins. The plants are vase shaped, upright and clumping in habit. Lavender, bell-shaped flowers appear on leafless stems above the foliage in late summer.

Overall, this hosta grows best in full to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soil types. It needs more morning sun to maintain good leaf color. Hostas have average water needs, but prefer even moisture. In hot and dry conditions most develop dry leaf edges and tips. Pests are also a problem. Slugs and snails favor Hosta leaves and riddle them with holes, and deer will feast on them if given the chance. Hosta are best used in shaded perennial gardens or can be massed as an herbaceous groundcover.
