HOSTA undulata var. undulata
Plantain Lily, Wavy-leaved Hosta, Wavy-leaved Plantain Lily
Hostas are herbaceous perennials grown for their attractive leaves, tolerance for shade, toughness, and mounding habit. This one, Hosta undulata var. undulata, is a medium-sized plant and forms a dense spreading clump of heart-shaped, twisted, wavy leaves that have an irregular white center and wide margins streaked with dark and light green. The flowers are lavender and borne in clusters on stalks that rise above the leaves in late summer.
Like most hostas, Hosta undulata var. undulata grows best in partial shade to full shade, tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, and prefers average, even moisture. Use it for contrasts of color, habit and texture in shaded perennial gardens and woodlands, or massed as a groundcover.
Confusingly, this hosta often appears at nurseries and garden centers by the name Hosta ‘Undulata Variegata.’
