General Description
Water violet is an spreading aquatic plant native to Eurasia. It has finely dissected, feather-like leaves that grow submerged. The stems are long and leaves arranged alternately or around the stem (whorled). The summer flowers are borne on long stalks above the water in loose groups gathered around the stem. They have short tubes which flatten into square-ish to oval lobes. The flower color is white, pale pink or lavender with a yellow throat.
Water violet grows best when the roots are planted below the water in mud or silt. Full sun is preferred and the water should be clear and still. Water violet overwinters in colder climates by winter resting buds (tightly packed, dormant buds) which sink to the bottom until warm weather returns. It is a good oxygenator and provides food for some species of fish. Water violet is a pretty choice for aquariums, bogs, ponds and water gardens.
