General Description

Hoya 'Krinkle 8'is a compact grower with heavy, green, indented leaves that have a crinkled appearance. The indentations are eight in number giving the plant its name.

Wax plant is a member of the milkweed family and native to the area from south China to Australia. It is a trailing, tender perennial, shrubby vine. The stout, waxy leaves are oval to oblong in shape, dark green and held oppositely on the stems. The flowers are sweetly fragrant at night and produced in large, rounded clusters. Individual flowers are heavy, waxy and porcelain-like. Flower color is pink with a distinctive, star-shaped red corolla (inner petals). The flowers appear spring through summer on perennial flower stalks which should not be pruned from the plant – new flower cluster appear on the same stalks year after year.

Hoyas are grown as house plants in all but the warmest areas. They prefer well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. As interior plants, they will survive low-light or curtain-filtered light, but only flower with several hours of very bright light every day. Water wax plant regularly during growth and flowering, but do allow soil to dry between applications and reduce waterings while dormant, usually in the winter. Use Hoya outside in frost-free locations in containers, on small trellises or any location which offers support for the stems.
