Family

Asclepiadaceae

Botanical Name

HOYA carnosa

Plant Common Name

Porcelain Flower, Wax Flower

General Description

Perfuming the night air with its domed clusters of intensely fragrant flowers, this tender evergreen climber from southern Asia and northern Australia has long been popular as a greenhouse and conservatory plant. The waxy porcelain-white or pale pink blooms have a red star-shaped corona at their centers. The flower clusters appear spring through summer on short side-shoots that bloom repeatedly and should not be removed. The fleshy oval to oblong leaves are paired. Several cultivars with variegated or contorted leaves are available.

Hoyas are grown as house plants in all but the warmest areas. They prefer well-drained soil and full or partial sun, blooming best with several hours of sun per day. Water wax plant regularly during growth and flowering, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering during winter. Where hardy, this clinging vine is ideal for ornamenting a garden wall or trellis. In colder climates it makes an excellent house or greenhouse plant.
