Botanical Name
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmer'( ENDLESS SUMMER®, ENDLESS SUMMER® SERIES) PP15298
Plant Common Name
Bigleaf Hydrangea, Endless Summer® Bigleaf Hydrangea, Largeleaf Hydrangea
General Description
The merits of the everblooming hydrangea, Endless Summer®, are great. From summer to early fall it produces lots of large, mophead flower clusters that may be pink or blue. It is remarkably cold hardy for a hydrangea and also boasts a compact habit and mildew resistant, glossy foliage.
The deep green leaves of this deciduous shrub first appear in spring. By early summer, it produces lots of large, rounded flower clusters (hortensia-type) with many showy, sterile flowers of light violet-blue or pink. It blooms on new wood and will flower from summer through fall if its spent flowers are cut off. Color varies depending on soil pH. Plants grown in moderately acid soil produce bluer flowers, while those planted in neutral to slightly alkaline soil produce pinker flowers. The leaves offer no significant fall color.
This hydrangea prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and will happily grow in full sun or partial shade. Unlike many other varieties, Endless Summer® blooms on new wood and has no cold requirement, which allows plants to flower freely. This is an outstanding landscape shrub for partially shaded gardens and foundations. Its colorful mopheads make wonderful, long-lasting cut flowers too.
