Family

Hydrangeaceae

Botanical Name

Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora'

Plant Common Name

Bigleaf Hydrangea, P. G. Hydrangea, Panicle Hydrangea, PeeGee Hydrangea

General Description

The huge panicles of 'Grandiflora' are truly grand. This Japanese selection has massive white clusters composed almost entirely of showy sterile flowers. It was first brought to the West in the late nineteenth century and is parent to many outstanding hardy cultivars available today. The shrub itself becomes quite large and can be trained to a tree-like standard. The common name "P.G." is explicit for this variety (Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora'), although "pee gee" is now confusingly attached to all panicle hydrangeas.

Large green leaves line the stems in spring and darken with age. In mid to late summer large panicles of flowers appear. These are covered with small inconspicuous fertile flowers and showy four-sepaled flowers that are flattened and papery. These are ivory and age to soft pink. They dry to crispy tan and persist on plants into winter. Some cultivars, like 'Grandiflora', have a higher number of showy sterile flowers than others.

P.G. hydrangea is best sited in full to partial sun and fertile soil with average moisture. Established specimens can tolerate urban conditions and limited drought. Its summer bloom makes it a good backdrop shrub for mixed borders and large landscape plantings. The flowers are also great for arrangements, fresh or dried.
