Hydrangeaceae
Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' PP12874
Limelight Hydrangea, Panicle Hydrangea
This is by far one of the most popular of all panicle hydrangea cultivars. The beautiful 'Limelight' offers large pyramidal panicles composed of many showy lime green flowers that fade to greenish white. The panicles are large and the stems thin, so the blooms tend to arch and weep, especially after a heavy rain. This robust grower becomes quite large and can be grafted or trained to a tree-like standard.
Large green leaves line the stems in spring and darken with age. In late summer, big panicles of flowers appear. These are covered with small inconspicuous fertile flowers and showy four-sepaled flowers that are flattened and papery. The greenish blooms age to soft pink, dry to crispy tan and persist on the plants into winter.
Panicle hydrangea is best sited in full to partial sun and fertile soil with average moisture. Established specimens can tolerate urban conditions and limited drought. Its summer bloom makes it a good backdrop shrub for mixed borders and large landscape plantings. The flowers are also great for arrangements fresh or dried.
