Family

Hydrangeaceae

Botanical Name

Hydrangea petiolaris

Plant Common Name

Climbing Hydrangea

General Description

Climbing hydrangea is deciduous, woody vine native to Japan, Korea and Taiwan. This vigorous clinging vine has distinctly red-brown branches covered with lustrous, heart-shaped, dark green leaves. In late spring to summer it produces flattened clusters of fragrant, white, lacecap flowers. In the winter its pretty, peeling red-brown bark provides interest.

Plant this vine in sites with partial sun to shade and fertile, well drained, highly organic soil. Climbing hydrangea can become quite large and needs a substantial support to cling to, such as a stone wall, tree or building face.
