Family

Hydrangeaceae

Botanical Name

HYDRANGEA serrata

Plant Common Name

Sawtooth Hydrangea, Tea-of-Heaven

General Description

A native of the mountains of Korea and Japan, mountain hydrangea is a deciduous flowering shrub with a rounded, bushy habit and coarse green toothed leaves. This summer blooming hydrangea shares a lot of similarities with the popular bigleaf hydrangea ( Hydrangea macrophylla), but it is more cold hardy, more compact and has smaller leaves.

Big clusters of flowers appear from mid to late- summer. These typically have small fertile flowers towards their centers and showy sterile flowers along their edges but many cultivars exist with mostly sterile blooms. There are two cluster types, the rounded hortensia or mophead-types and the flattened lacecap-types. The flowers vary in color and may pink, blue, violet, white or green. Flower color is pH dependent, acid soils encourage bluer flowers and alkaline soils pinker.

This hydrangea grows happily in full sun or partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Pruning is rarely necessary but should be done immediately after bloom. This is an outstanding landscape shrub for partially shaded gardens and foundations. Its beautiful flowers have a long vase life and also dry well and can be used as everlastings.
