Botanical Name

HYMENOCALLIS latifolia

Plant Common Name

Chrysolite Lily

General Description

A beautiful tropical spider lily, Hymenocallus latifolia is a tender evergreen bulb grown for lush foliage and unusual vanilla-scented, creamy white blooms. It is native to South Florida and the West Indies.

Hymenocallus latifolia prefers light shade, particularly in the hottest part of the day. It thrives in fertile, organic-rich soil with average to poor drainage. In fact, it will tolerate very highly saturated soils. It is cold sensitive, so its bulbs should be dug and stored indoors where not hardy. The plants form large clumps over time and should be divided when not in bloom. When planting the bulbs, be sure the necks and the very tops are above the soil layer.

Grow spider lily in moist tropical or subtropical gardens. They are great for water garden edges and grow well in containers, indoors or out.
