Family

Arecaceae

Botanical Name

HYOPHORBE lagenicaulis

Plant Common Name

Bottle Palm

General Description

Bottle palm is a relatively small, single trunked palm with a magnificent architecture. It is practically extinct on its native Mascarene Islands off the coast of Madagascar. The gray and ringed trunk is very fat and then sharply narrows at the crownshaft where the four to five stiff arching fronds emerge. Its leaves are medium to dark green. In summer, small green to creamy white flowers are produced.

Bottle palm requires full sun and relatively fertile, fast draining soil. Avoid very sandy soils unless organic material can be incorporated. Ensure it is regularly fertilized with micronutrients to ensure its few, obvious fronds to not discolor as it is slow to replace older leaves. To accentuate the water storing trunk "bottle", provide it with ample water and fertilizer in the summer, with a distinctive dry season in the winter. Bottle palm can be used indoors, but only if intense light and ample room can be provided.
