General Description

With handsome purplish green foliage with lighter green undersides, Albury Purple tutsan is especially pretty when the yellow summertime flowers develop into berry-like fruits that change from red to purple to black as they ripen. Native from western Europe eastward to northern Iran, this semi-evergreen shrub is bushy and mounding in form with many upright branches.

The new leaves emerge purplish burgundy and mature with more green tones, each blade held in opposite pairs on the branches. Leaves are oblong and have a lighter green underside. In summer, branch tips bear upwards of ten fragrant yellow flowers that have five cupped petals. Butterflies and bees pollinate the blossoms so small red berry-like fruits form and change in color then from purple to black.

Grow 'Albury Purple' in well-drained soils of average garden fertility. Excelling in moist soils and when growing in partial to deep shade, use it as a massed planting in woodland setting or on the shaded sides of buildings, or the shady spot in the mixed border.
