Family

Aquifoliaceae

Botanical Name

ILEX 'Mesog'(CHINA GIRL) PP4878

Plant Common Name

China Girld Hybrid Holly, Hybrid Holly

General Description

A uniform shape, beautiful glossy foliage, plentiful orange-red berries and dense growth set this evergreen holly apart from others. The popular shrub holly, China Girl, is a cross between Ilex rugosa and Ilex cornuta and was introduced by The Conard-Pyle Company of West Grove, Pennsylvania.

The medium-sized leaves are green, semi-glossy and spiny along the edges. Hollies are dioecious, which means that some plants have only male flowers and some only female flowers and fruit. China Girl is a female clone, so it offers lots of colorful orange-red fruit in fall and winter, but for good fruiting the male clone, China Boy, is needed for pollination and fruit-set.

This shrub accepts most soils so long as they are well-drained, tolerates moderate bouts of drought once established and grows well in full or partial sun. It is a vigorous plant that is suitable for hedges, shrub or mixed borders.
