General Description
Eastern North America's prized deciduous holly, winterberry is an unsurpassed shrub for winter landscape color and interest. The male cultivar 'Southern Gentlemen' makes an excellent pollenizer for female winterberry cultivars that share its later spring flowering period. A rounded, densely branched shrub, it bears numerous small white male flowers on new growth in late spring, about two weeks after the toothed, oval, dark green leaves emerge.
Plant 'Southern Gentlemen' in full sun and moist, well-drained soil for best flowering. It does well in damp sites. Use it as a foundation shrub or in a mixed shrub border in association with late-blooming female winterberry cultivars such as 'Winter Red', 'Winter Gold', 'Capapon', and the hybrid 'Sparkleberry'. Oce plant of 'Southern Gentlemen' will adequately pollinate up to five female plants.
