Celebration Cherry Red New Guinea Impatiens, New Guinea Impatiens
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
Celebration Cherry Red is a colorful and heat-tolerant New Guinea Impatiens. The plants are vigorous, well-branched, upright-mounding and compact. Large, vibrant, round flowers are candy red. They appear in large quantities and continue blooming all season without deadheading or pruning. The foliage is lush and dark green.
The New Guinea hybrids are combined crosses between several parent species which include Impatiens hawkeri, Impatiens schlechteri and Impatiens platypetala. This suite of tropical perennials was collected from the island of Papua New Guinea, which is northeast of Australia.
New Guinea impatiens, though more heat and sun tolerant than common impatiens, do prefer several hours of shade per day, particularly in hot and humid climates. These cold-sensitive perennials are planted as summer annuals in colder zones and winter annuals or tender, short-lived perennials in warmer areas. Well-drained, rich, moist soils and regular applications of water and fertilizer are best for vigorous growth and flowering. If given ideal growing conditions, they will bloom continuously. These popular bedding plants add quick and easy color to any border or container.
