The Celebrette Series of colorful and heat and cold-tolerant New Guinea Impatiens are well-branched, compact and moderately sized. They offer large, vibrant flowers in a wide range of colors which start blooming early and continue all season. The foliage is lush and dark green or variegated and the plants form tidy mounds.
The New Guinea hybrids are combined crosses between several parent species which include Impatiens hawkeri, Impatiens schlechteri and Impatiens platypetala. This suite of tropical perennials was collected from the island of Papua New Guinea, which is northeast of Australia.
These impatiens can be distinguished from common garden impatiens by their larger, five-petaled, flattened flowers and lance-shaped often beautifully colored leaves. They also are grow in a bushy-upright or vase-shaped habit.
New Guinea impatiens, though more heat and sun tolerant than common impatiens, do prefer several hours of shade per day, particularly in hot and humid climates. These cold-sensitive perennials are planted as summer annuals in colder zones and winter annuals or tender, short-lived perennials in warmer areas. Well-drained, rich, moist soils and regular applications of water and fertilizer are best for vigorous growth and flowering. If given ideal growing conditions, they will bloom continuously. These popular bedding plants add quick and easy color to any border or container.
