IMPATIENS( New Guinea Hybrid, PAINTED PARADISE™ SERIES)
New Guinea Impatiens, Painted Paradise New Guinea Impatiens
These are tried and true shade-loving bedding plants that everyone knows and loves. Surprisingly, the “annuals” are actually shrubby tender perennials that will survive winters in tropical and sub-tropical zones. Members of the heat-tolerant Fanfare™ Series are compact hybrids with beautiful multicolored, or “painted”, foliage.
Clump forming and everblooming, impatiens produce many broad, flattened, five-petaled flowers all season. They are attractive to butterflies, among other insect pollinators. The fruits are ridged, bulbous, green capsules. When mature, they explode when squeezed to spread their seeds. There are hundreds of Impatien cultivars of varying heights and colors.
Impatiens perform best under lower light, partial sun to partial shade is best. They require humus-rich, evenly moist soil that is well-drained and need regular applications of fertilizer for best flowering. All are highly cold-sensitive, so plant them only after the threat of frost has past. If given these conditions, they are easy to grow and make outstanding additions to shaded gardens, containers and hanging baskets. Overwatering can cause stem and root rot.
