IMPATIENS schlechteri

Image of Impatiens schlechteri

Family

Balsaminaceae

Botanical Name

IMPATIENS schlechteri

Plant Common Name

New Guinea Impatiens

General Description

New Guinea Impatiens distinguish themselves from common garden impatiens with extra large flowers, beautifully colored and marked leaves and better branching. Impatiens schlechteri is one of the original New Guinea impatiens and a parent of the hybrids. It is native to New Guinea Island north of Australia. The stems are dull red, fleshy and succulent. The green leaves are oblong and have toothed margins. The flowers are shaped like a spreading funnel with long nectar spurs and are deep carmine red.

New Guinea impatiens, though more heat and sun tolerant than common impatiens, do require several hours of shade per day, particularly during the hottest periods. They are cold sensitive, plant as summer annuals in colder zones and winter annuals or tender, short-lived perennials in warmer areas. Well-drained, rich, moist soils and regular applications of water are best for vigorous growth and flowering.
