IRIS sibirica 'Ruffled Velvet'

Family

Iridaceae

Botanical Name

IRIS sibirica 'Ruffled Velvet'

Plant Common Name

Ruffled Velvet Siberian Iris, Siberian Iris

General Description

Siberian irises are hybrids or selections of Iris sibirica, a tall, rhizomatous, beardless iris native from central Europe to Turkey and Russia. The cultivar 'Ruffled Velvet' bears velvety, ruffled, rich plum-purple flowers on compact stems in late spring. The clumps of grass-like green foliage are also attractive.

Siberian irises do best in sunny locations and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. As their name suggests, they are very cold-hardy. Divide the dense clumps every three years or so. Enjoy this vigorous perennial in any large, sunny flower bed or planted en masse. The flowers can be cut but have a short vase life.
